RIVERS, CANALS AND WATERWAYS
The principal rivers which draw the district are the pennar and Swarnamukhi. Other streams occasional and torrential in character are Kandleru and Boggeru. All these rivers and rivulets get dry for a major part of the year and carry heavy floods during the rainy seasons. The numerous minor streams in the district are little more than mountain torrents and their beds lie so low beneath the adjoining lands that their water is seldom available for irrigation purposes. The pennar river is the most important river, a boon to the eastern half of the taluks of Nellore and kovur. It flows for about 112 kms. in the district through Atmakur and between Kovur and Nellore taluks and falls in the Bay of Bengal. It has two anicuts one at Sangam and the other at Nellore.

RIVERS, CANALS AND WATERWAYS
The principal rivers which draw the district are the pennar and Swarnamukhi. Other streams occasional and torrential in character are Kandleru and Boggeru. All these rivers and rivulets get dry for a major part of the year and carry heavy floods during the rainy seasons. The numerous minor streams in the district are little more than mountain torrents and their beds lie so low beneath the adjoining lands that their water is seldom available for irrigation purposes. The pennar river is the most important river, a boon to the eastern half of the taluks of Nellore and kovur. It flows for about 112 kms. in the district through Atmakur and between Kovur and Nellore taluks and falls in the Bay of Bengal. It has two anicuts one at Sangam and the other at Nellore.

This district is generally flat and of low elevation and forms part of the Karnatic Plains. The sandy Coastal belt, extends fro the sea for 3 to 4 miles (5 to 7 kms.) interior, all along the length of the district. There are numerous back waters along the coast and the best known among them is the Pulicat lake. Towards the extreme south-east is the Island of Sriharikota where the East Coast Rocket Launching station is located. This district can broadly be divided into two natural divisions from North to South. the Eastern half of the district adjoining the coastal belt is fairly fertile with large tracts of Paddy cultivating areas. The coast is fringed with large tracts of shrub jungle, interspersed with coconut, palmyrah, cashew and casuarina plantations. The western half of the district has a low elevation towards west with large tract of low shrub jungles diversified with rocky hills and stony plains. The small tanks containing an uncertain supply of water, the irrigable lands constantly thrown out of cultivation and stunted crops grown on poor soils mark the difficulties against which riots strive hard to gain a precarious livelihood in this division. The district ranks 10th in regard to geographical area among the district of Andhra Pradesh and extending over an area of 13076 sq. kms. There are 1110 inhabited and 72 uninhabited census villages with 8 towns including 3 municipalities i.e., Nellore, kavali and Gudur.

HISTORY
Vikramsimha Mahavir, Manumasiddhi Maharaj ruled this Nellore town, with Simhapuri as its capital. One of the writers of Mahabharatha in telugu,'Kavi Brahma','Ubhaya Kavimithrudu' writer kavi thikkanna, worked as prime minister and Khadga Thikkanna as Defence minister. During this period this state flourished with highest paddy yield. That is why it is called "nelli" an equivalent word for paddy in tamil. In course of time the name Nellivur is changed to NELLORE, as was written in sthala puranam and history. Nellore was the only Education Centre in Andhra Pradesh during the British rule.
Geologists assert that the early and middle palaeolithians flourished in the coastal area stretching from Orissa to South Arcot, particularly in the Cuddapah, guntur and Nellore districts. This area is rich in particular kind of flint called quartzite, out of which prehistoric man made his weapons and implements. With the rise of the Mauryan Empire, nellore also seems to have come under its influence and was part of the Ashokan empire in the third century B.C. The district was next included in the Pallava dominion between the fourth and sixth centuries A.D.With the dawn of the seventh century, the political centre of Gravity of the Pallavas shifted to the south and weakened their power, the north. During the British period, the district tasted the blessings of settled peace, the only event of any political importance being the sequestration in 1838, of the Jagir of Udaygiri, owing to its title holder's participation in a conspiracy, engineered by the Nawab of Kurnool, against the ruling power. After the district came under the british administration the jurisdiction of the district did not undergo any major changes, but for the transfer of Ongole taluk in 1904 to guntur district when it was newly constituted. The former Zamindaries in the district viz., (1) Venkatagiri, (2) Pamur (part of the former kalahasti Estate) (3) Chundi and alienated villages and (4) Mutyal- ampadu covering nearly an extent of 3538 sw. miles (9163 sq. km.) were taken over by the government during 1949 and 1950 under the Madras Estates (Abolition and Conversion into Ryotwari) Act, 1948 and the Madras Estates Land (Reduction of Rent) Act of 1948. During the decade 1941-51 there was a transfer of few border villages between this district and Chinglepur district. During the decade 1951-61 three villages viz., Krishnapuram, Peddauyyalawada and Chinnauyyalawada of Ongole taluk, of guntur district and Kotikalapudi village of Darsi taluk, was transferred to Ongole taluk, of the then Guntur district.
The district formed part of the composite Madras State till 1st October, 1953. On 1st November, 1956 when the States reorganized on linguistic basis this district under came Andhra Pradesh State.

Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple
is located on the banks of river Pennar. This temple is famous and is considered equal to Lord Vishnu Temple at Srirangam and the deity is called Talpagiri Ranganatha Swamy. The temple is known for its architectural values and is more than 500 years old. The famous Mirror Hall in this temple is a treat to watch.
Narasimhakonda
This Temple is situated on a hill called Vedagiri and is 20kms away from Nellore. The deity in the temple Lord Narasimha is considered very sacred and you can see the entire Nellore Town from the top of this Vedagiri hill.
Jonnawada
This temple in Jonnawada is dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi alongwith Mallikarjuna Swamy and is considered as powerful as Kanchi Kamakshi. You can see a "Sri Chakram" in the temple installed by Sri Jagdguru Sankaracharya. This temple town is situated around 12 kms from Nellore.
Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary
This famous Bird Sanctuary is around 60kms away from Nellore. It is located on the banks of Pulicat River and is spread over 486 sq. kms. Best time to visit is during October and November. The famous Siberian cranes and nearly 160 species of birds from USA, China, Antarctica and many more can be seen here.
SHAR Centre
The Indian Space Research Organization has established SHAR Centre near Sullurpet and is 100 kms away from Nellore. .More than 325 sounding rockets have been sent from this space centre. The famous SLV-3 satellite was launched from this space centre. You need prior permission from the authorities to visit this centre.
Krishna Patnam Port
This is located around 15kms from Nellore. The Central Govt., is developing this into a mini port. This port was in existence right from the period Chola dynasty. It'll be nice to spend few hours near this port.
Mypad Beach
25 km.away from Nellore, this is a fine sandy beach. A determined sea lover will find the entire coastline of Andhra Pradesh stunningly appealing with azure sea waters gently washing the sun kissed sands and lush green vegetation providing an enchanting back drop.

In course of time the name Nellivur is changed to NELLORE, as was written in sthala puranam and history. Nellore was the only Education Centre in Andhra Pradesh during the British rule.
This area is rich in particular kind of flint called quartzite, out of which prehistoric man made his weapons and implements. With the rise of the Mauryan Empire, nellore also seems to have come under its influence and was part of the Ashokan empire in the third century B.C. The district was next included in the Pallava dominion between the fourth and sixth centuries A.D.With the dawn of the seventh century, the political centre of Gravity of the Pallavas shifted to the south and weakened their power, the north. During the British period, the district tasted the blessings of settled peace, the only event of any political importance being the sequestration in 1838, of the Jagir of Udaygiri, owing to its title holder's participation in a conspiracy, engineered by the Nawab of Kurnool, against the ruling power. After the district came under the british administration the jurisdiction of the district did not undergo any major changes, but for the transfer of Ongole taluk in 1904 to guntur district when it was newly constituted.
